Introduction: Timing is Everything
Komodo National Park offers world-class diving year-round, but the experience changes dramatically with the seasons. Shifts in water temperature, currents, and marine life patterns create distinct underwater “personalities” between the north and south of the park.
Whether you love manta encounters, calm coral gardens, or adrenaline-charged drifts, choosing the right time of year can elevate your trip from great to unforgettable.
🌤 The Dry Season (April – November): Peak Diving Conditions
The dry season is Komodo’s most popular period for liveaboard adventures — especially June to October.
Weather: Consistently sunny, dry skies, calm seas.
Water Temps:
North Komodo: 27–29 °C
South Komodo: Can drop to 24–25 °C due to cold upwellings.
Currents: Predictable and strong, ideal for advanced drift dives.
Marine Life:
Large pelagic action in the north — jacks, trevally, tuna, sharks.
South Komodo hosts nutrient-rich water, bringing manta rays and huge schools of fish.
Excellent visibility in the north (20–30 m), slightly lower in the south due to upwellings.
👉 Best for: Divers who want the widest range of sites, great visibility, and pelagic encounters.
📅 Book early: June–October trips fill up fast for 2026–2027.
🌧 The Wet Season (December – March): A Different Kind of Magic
While some operators pause during the wet season, Liquid Adventures continues year-round. This period offers a unique perspective:
Weather: Tropical showers, greener islands, occasional wind shifts.
Water Temps: Warmer and more consistent — 27–30 °C across both regions.
Currents: Generally milder, making some southern sites more accessible.
Marine Life:
North Komodo remains vibrant and full of life.
Manta rays often congregate in central sites like Mawan and Karang Makassar.
Coral gardens thrive under lower tourist pressure.
👉 Best for: Divers who prefer warmer waters, fewer boats, and a lush backdrop above water.
📝 Booking Tip: Match the Season to Your Style
Love big pelagics and clear blue water? → Aim for June–October.
Prefer milder currents, warmer temps, and fewer boats? → Consider January–March.
Want balanced conditions with fewer tourists? → Transitional April–May or November can be spectacular.
